Autumn has well and truly arrived in the Kent vineyards. 🍂🍁
It’s such a beautiful time of year to visit, with stunning sunsets not to be missed. The vineyards come alive with shades of gold, orange and red.

Think not much happens during autumn and winter? Read on!..

🍇 Harvest season in Kent usually begin September – October where the each bunch is carefully picked at the perfect stage of ripeness ready to be transformed into next years wines. Winemakers will monitor sugar and acidity levels to decide the perfect time for harvesting. Grapes that are left on the vines the longest produce the highest sugar levels.

🍷 After harvest the grapes are pressed and will begin the fermentation process. The grapes begin their journey, aging and developing their unique flavours. It takes months and often years to create each vintage.

❄️ In winter, vines go dormant, resting and recharging for the next seasons growth.

🔥 Dormant vines can tolerate some winter cold but the time they are at greatest risk is in spring during bud burst. Some vineyards protect their vines during this time by lighting small fires evenly spaced out among the vines.

✂️ Winter pruning is essential to control growth and ensure a balanced crop the next year. It directly influences the vine’s growth, yield and the quality of the fruit. Think how many vines there are even in the smaller vineyards.. It’s a hands on job!

There you have it, Kent vineyards are full of life and transformation even in the cooler months, there’s a whole world of activity happening behind the scenes!

Each season tells its own story which we love sharing with all our tour guests! 🍂🍁❄️🍇
